Gibraltar Recycling

Household waste & Recycling
All of Gibraltar’s municipal waste is sent an environmental park and landfill site in Spain, which opened in 2003. At the park, there is both manual and automated separation/sorting processes to recover paper, plastics and metals from incoming waste. Organic material is processed to create a ‘saleable’ composted product and all residual waste is baled and buried in the landfill adjacent to the facility.

Recycling – Common recycling symbols and what they mean
Wood and metal is sorted locally at a site in Gibraltar. There is a separate Recycling Centre at Europa Advance Road where householders can dispose of their bulky timber items, white goods, large electrical and electronic items, mattresses and scrap metal. These materials are then treated or recycled at the appropriate plants.

The public can also recycle smaller items, such as batteries, glass, cans, paper, plastic and small electrical and electronic items by placing them in strategically placed recycling bins. These small items and material are sorted and are sent to recycling plants in Spain.

At the Gibraltar recycling plant, all materials collected are reprocessed into new materials for manufacturing.

Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment
There are various WEEE recycling bins around Gibraltar. In addition to these, there is also a facility for the collection and sorting of all large WEEE items including boilers, washing machines, and so on.

The WEEE Recycling Centre is situated at Europa Advance Battery, Europa Advance Road and it is open to the public Mondays to Fridays, 8am to 8pm and on Saturdays, Sundays and most public holidays, from 9am to 5pm.
