Mapping Our Past Gibraltar Exhibition

In November 2016, the Gibraltar National Archives presented an exhibition, ‘Mapping our Past’ showcasing the beauty of maps, plans and other cartographic curiosities from their Special Collections.

The aim of the exhibition was to publicly showcase an original, representative sample of their extensive, physical and digital cartographic holdings. The exhibition combined both analogue (physical) and digital components and a combination of technical and artistic styles were brought together, including important contributions from the Royal Engineers Regiment, the City Council, (later the Public Works draftsmen), surveyors, and engineers.

Additionally, there were important pieces from historical cartography, some of which were quite unique, which provided a diverse blend to the exhibition.

The showpiece is an over-sized, framed, 18th Century, Map of Gibraltar, created by Major Charles Warren, Royal Engineers – click for image.
